Arrivederci 2021! Ciao 2022!

Despite the rollercoaster of a pandemic, the growth cycle of a vineyard does not stop. We continued to tender the vines and make wine. Fortunately for us, you are part of the loyal following of SOUMAH and for that, we are extremely thankful. To top it off, we have experienced an exceptional 2021 vintage, some of which is now available.

In the Vineyard

Our passion for northern Italian varieties expanded this year with the addition of Barbera to the northern end of our Hexham vineyard. Barbera is considered a ‘wine of the people’ and is meant to be enjoyed young. This grape has low tannins, high acidity, and deep red colour with fruit flavours of dark cherry, plum and blackberry. Our Barbera will become a single vineyard wine as well as be used in our Rosso d’Soumah blend.

Furthermore we planted two clones — new to Australia — of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with Cabernet Franc on the way. The Yarra Valley provides prime terroir for this classic blend highlighted by the many super premium Bordeaux blends already in the valley.

The Wine

The 2021 vintage was exceptional due to favourable weather conditions. We experienced a wet and warm winter, a cool spring with low temperatures into summer, a few drenching showers in January and then a mostly dry February.

The January rain increased the crop slightly, although the crunch of natural acidity from a cooler season helped set up good natural fermentation and ultimate wine balance.

The following wines were recently released:
2021 Tutto Bianco d’Soumah
2021 Pinot Noir d’Soumah
2021 Barbera Nebbiolo d’Soumah
2021 Single Vineyard Hexham Chardonnay
2021 Single Vineyard Pinot Grigio
2021 Ai Fiori Rosato

The High Achievers

Although lockdowns and social distancing made it a difficult to conduct wine shows and competitions, we still managed to reap accolades from some notable wine authorities. Our Wild Savagnin Solero No. 1 received its first award — a Double Gold no less at the Melbourne International Wine Competition. In addition, Soumah was named Yarra Valley Winery of the Year 2021 at this competition – our third time!

Other Double Gold winners at Melbourne International Wine Comp:
– 2020 Single Vineyard Hexham Chardonnay
2019 Equilibrio Pinot Noir

Gold at Melbourne International Wine Comp:
2019 Single Vineyard Viognier

This year’s European Wine Challenge also dished out Gold for:
2019 Equilibrio Chardonnay
– 2019 Single Vineyard Hexham Chardonnay

Improvements & Additions

If you have stopped in at SOUMAH since Melbourne re-opened in late October, you will have noticed a few changes on the property. For the vineyard crew, there is a new 430sqm loft shed with offices, staff areas and storage.

Our restaurant has undergone an extension and the views are even more dramatic through floor to ceiling French windows. Please come and visit soon to enjoy our latest menu items from our newly appointed chef, Jak!

Regarding accommodation, we recently received planning approval to build four standalone cottages. Work on these is expected to commence in the second half of 2022, with completion planned mid-2023. We will eventually be able to welcome up to 20 people for overnight stays at SOUMAH. Imagine… sleeping among the stunning vineyard views and clear starry nights, with a short stroll to the cellar door and Trattoria.

Thank You!

On behalf of the Soumah team, I would like to wish you a very safe and memorable Christmas and New Year with those you may not have seen in a while. I’m sure it will be one for us all to embrace, reflect and celebrate. Keep the wine flowing, I say!

We look forward to seeing you in 2022.
