GREAT WINE IS MADE IN THE VINEYARD

Soumah of Yarra Valley set out to select an exact location that delivered every advantage of a cool climate, undulating topography and ancient soils. We then wanted to bring some focus to our endeavour. After being resident overseas for many years, we found the elegance and honesty of northern Italian wines and food is what inspires us.

We grow varieties you would expect to find in the Yarra Valley, such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as well as northern Italian varieties and styles including Brachetto, Nebbiolo, Marzemino, Savarro and Pinot Grigio. We endeavour to search for native northern Italian vines to plant at Soumah to continue the quest to build a little bit of Italy in the Yarra Valley.

Only an hour drive from Melbourne, taste our award-winning wines at our cellar door and dine at our restaurant, Trattoria d’Soumah, while taking in the view. For something more exclusive, book a private tutored tasting in our Premium Wine Room or indulge in an extended stay at Ville d’Soumah, a spacious country-style property located in our vineyard.

The Yarra Valley cool climate focus allows SOUMAH to specialise in wine styles and varieties typical of northern Italy as well as south-eastern France. Our Hexham vineyard on the Warramate foothills is the mainstay of production, although we do look for small parcels of premium fruit from other vineyards to bring additional Single Vineyard wines to the market. Our most awarded wines are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with recent recognition for our Viognier and Syrah as well as a passion for northern Italian varieties of Nebbiolo, Brachetto, Pinot Grigio and Savarro (or Savagnin).

  • This magnificent cool-climate wine has a vibrant purple colour, a gorgeous cool-climate bouquet of red berries with just a hint of eucalyptus, some spice and a dash of subtle vanillin oak. The palate is generous, round and rich yet still tight and tasty with blackcurrant flavours. It will blossom magnificently over the next few years to become an Iconic Australian cool climate Cabernet Sauvignon – in the meantime it is “well moreish” especially if you decant it a while before drinking it - 2021 Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

  • Soumah – the name means south of the Maroondah Highway – is one of the rising stars of the Yarra Valley with an impressive range of compelling wines at very fair prices. d’Soumah 2022 Pinot Noir is a bright, lively young pinot that is extremely food friendly – consider matching it with roast chicken or duck dishes, or a spring picnic. It is a wine with fresh acidity on the palate and some well-integrated oak. I would recommend enjoying this in its youth, and it could even be served lightly chilled.

  • The “pièce-de-résistance”, the flagship Soumah Equilibrio 2022 Chardonnay (vegan friendly). OMG! This is the epitome of a cool-climate Chardy with a divine, lively bouquet of citrus (mainly lemons) with a dash of florals and a splash of stone fruit. It has a magnificent, mouth-filling, crisp palate with fabulous depth of flavour, great structure and a vibrant, refreshing, lingering finish with just a trace of fine vanillin oak. TRULY AWESOME!

  • Soumah Equilibrio Syrah 2019, Yarra Valley📍🇦🇺 There’s no shortage of dark fruit brooding intensity here 👏🏼🍷 Nose - Black plum, boysenberry, and black cherry, with mineral accents, ironstone, iodine, nori-esque savoury undertones and a peppery charred meaty density 👏🏼🍷 Palate - Medium bodied, intensely concentrated, lux. Deep and dark with a core of sweet black and purple fruits, delicious meaty density, and savoury pepper spice. Tight acidity keeps the structure tight, fine tannins add good grip, and sweet vanilla a touch of softness on the finish. It’s a style unlike many you’ll find from the Yarra and I really quite like it. It’s bloody good drinking.
