MASTERCLASS SERIES 2022: February Session | Italian Varietals

This is a rare opportunity to experience a realm of northern Italian varieties, locally grown and imported, that are not usually on our tasting menu.

Seated in the comfort of our premium wine room, our knowledgeable team will transport you to northern Italy and guide you through an exceptional tasting of ten wines (nine different Italian varieties), explaining each variety, their origin — in many cases, their ancient history — and why we grow or import these wines.

Tasting list and details follow.

Italian Varietals Wine List

2021 Ai Fiori Rosato, $28
Made with our first harvest of Marzemino!

2019 Tarlao Friulano Bianco Albero del Noce DOC, $35
From the historical UNESCO listed vineyards of Tarlao, Aquilea in the most north-eastern region of Italy, the Albero del Noce is 100% Friulano and is a recent addition to our Italian import line-up.

2019 Ellena Giuseppe Nascetta Langhe DOC, $33
Nascetta has experienced a resurgence after almost two hundred years, when it was rediscovered about ten years ago. It is grown in a mere ten hectares throughout the world!

NV SOUMAH Wild Savagnin ‘Solero’ No.1, $80
This may be the oldest variety you’ll taste in this line-up. Savagnin was first recorded in the 10th century, in a small village of Tramin. It’s not just the ancient variety that will inspire, it’s the ancient winemaking in the modern world that will fascinate.

2016 Cantina d’Isera Marzemino Trentino DOC , $29
Trentino is the spiritual home of Marzemino and this is a wonderful example of the variety without the price tag!

2019 Cantina d’Isera Teroldego Vignetti delle Dolomiti IGT, $32
Teroldego is synonymous with the Trentino region and somewhat iconic. It is steeped in ancient history, dating back hundreds of years. It is the parent variety of both Marzemino and Lagrein.

2018 Cantina d’Isera Lagrein Trentino DOC, $43
Grown in the hills of Isera, Lagrein is another ancient red wine grape variety dating back at least to the 16th Century that is well-known for its deep, intense colour.

2018 Ellena Giuseppe Nebbiolo Langhe DOC, $39
Grown in La Morra, a north-western municipality in the Piedmont region, this is a great example of an approachable Nebbiolo.

2019 SOUMAH SV Nebbiolo, $40 (Pre-Release)
The Yarra Valley climate is ideal for growing Nebbiolo; hot, short summers and cool nights. Dan Traucki (@dandawineman) says, “… A great food wine. SUPERB!!”

2017 Ellena Giuseppe Barolo La Morra, $60
Considered one of the world’s greatest wines, Barolo is made from 100% Nebbiolo. From the winemaking stage with about 30 months of aging and then bottle aging, it can be close to four years before this wine is ready to enjoy!
