2019 Chardonnay d’Soumah

$28.00

We pick Chardonnay as early as we can to ensure we retain a fresh line of citrus fruit and crisp natural acidity on the palate. We develop structure by predominantly barrel fermenting the juice and allowing it mature gracefully for eight months, before bottling a wine with balanced weight and silky texture. Serve the wine nicely chilled and it will be an excellent accompaniment with seafood and chicken dishes along with pasta and salads.

‘A new age, citrus crisp Chardonnay with texture and finesse.’

2019 VINTAGE:
Spring started dry and cold with rains coming late. The four weeks from late-Nov to mid-Dec witnessed 7-inches of rain. A godsend in hindsight as we experienced the driest summer on record with less than 2-inches from late-Dec through Feb. This parching added to the heat with the summer being 2.5 degrees hotter than normal. Picking times were early and wines will be full fruited with soft tannin structure.

Our d’Soumah range of wines are made with fruit sourced from our own and other premium vineyards throughout the Yarra Valley to produce wines of distinct character and finesse that our region has become famous. Chardonnay is the most famous whites from the Yarra Valley and is one of the best regions in Australia for producing new age, linear fresh wines. Our d’Soumah range is built to deliver an exceptional price for value proposition and we believe this wine certainly delivers on that promise.

“Fresh-faced stye with just enough texture, complexity and length to keep most folks happy. Pear, stone fruit, powdered milk and ginger-spice notes get the job done. 91 Points.”
Campbell Mattinson, Halliday Wine Companion, August 2020 [2019 Vintage]

“If you are yet to introduce yourself to Soumah wines, this is a great place to start. A well made Chardonnay, this is blended from a range of Yarra Valley parcels to deliver an easy drinking and refreshing wine. The boxes are ticked with white fleshed stone fruits and lemon juice plus vanilla cream and a grapefruit tang. It’s a wine with a neat flow and pleasure factor with some depth yet retaining some uplifting energy seen in modern Chardonnays. A big thumbs up. Drink now to three years. 91 Points.”
QWine, July 2020 [2019 Vintage]

“Soumah sounds like an interesting place so it is a bit of a disappointment to find the name comes from South of the Maroondah Highway. The good news, however, is that this Yarra Valley producer is building a formidable reputation for quality wines at very fair prices. This is a bright young chardonnay that is fresh and vibrant but also with some textural elements from older oak. Wild yeast fermentation and battonage have added palate interest but it is citrus and stone fruit elements that are very much to the for along with minerally acidity. This would be fabulous with fish and chips”
Winsor Dobbin, July 2020 [2019 Vintage]

“…A bright lemony yellow showing off its youthfulness and potential. A light to medium bodied Chardonnay that has elegance, grace and substance. Aromas of peach, melon, citrus lemons and broiche shine through. The nose is where it happening bigtime.

I like the overall structure of this wine, the way the aromas show off the fruit along with its fresh and crisp acidity along with there oak, enough to make its mark and put everything into its rightful place… Not a big Chardonnay but not a light pretty one either. An each way bet is the way I would call it. It drinks really well, with a long peach melon creamy nutty finish. A beautiful classic Chardonnay. Try it with veal saltimbocca. 93/100 – Excellent”
Paul Ippolito, Sept 2019 [2018 Vintage]

“Yellow-straw in colour, with melon and wholemealy threads, this is an immediately inviting chardonnay. Subdued fruit characters flow through a smooth harmonious mouthful with enough phenolic grip at the end for savoury balance. 90 Points.”
Ralph Kyte-Powell, The Real Review, May 2019 [2018 Vintage]

“Picked early to retain freshness, this entry-level Chardonnay from the Yarra Valley’s Soumah Wines is no slouch. A blend of various sites, the fruit was predominantly barrel fermented and aged for eight months. It’s an easy drinking drop with some interest but cruising along without too much complexity to fuss over. Juicy and tangy lemons plus licks of vanilla. The acid shines a fraction brighter than the fruit, but you can’t knock youthful exuberance. Good stuff!”
QWine, April 2019 [2018 Vintage]

“This is a gorgeous wine with rich, attractive aromas of stone fruit and lime, beautifully balanced crisp acidity, great structure with a steely backbone and heaps of delightful flavours. It is a superb wine that given some time will become an iconic Yarra Chardonnay. BLOODY BRILLIANT!!”
Dan Traucki/Director at Wine Assist, May 2019 [2018 Vintage]

“Hundreds of words on the front and back labels tell you the wine is predominantly fermented and matured for eight months in French oak. A snappy, fresh Chardonnay born of the cool ’17 vintage and steep vineyard hills, part undergoing mlf! Bargain hunters ahoy.
Halliday Wine Companion 2019 [2017 Vintage]

Picked early to retain citrusy fruit and crisp acidity. Barrel fermented and aged for eight months to develop texture. A really good drink – well done SOUMAH team. Tangy lime and shades of green apple. White stonefruit pins this wine together but very much taking a back seat. Flashes of Cashew nuttiness with a faint match stick peering through. Soft ginger like spice is met by lemony sherbet and grapefruit acid tang to finish. Quite a refreshing and easy drinking type. Drink now to three years.”
