2022 Pinot Noir d'Soumah

Our Pinot Noir has an attractive garnet colour and delivers a cherry and raspberry fruit profile along with savoury fleshiness. The barrel fermentation develops the rich flavour and aroma of the wine and a good portion of new barrels adding classic soft oak characters helping the overall integration of the wine. Serving the wine cool (around 15 degrees) will ensure the flavour profile which suits pairing with Mediterranean dishes, chicken, duck and light meats.
‘A savoury Pinot Noir with elegant red fruits and soft, composed length.’

Winter was wetter and warmer than the 25-year average, building the
water table with spring cooler than normal, slowing down the vegetative cycle. These cooler temperatures persisted into summer with some abnormal drenching rains in January adding to the mild temperatures. February witnessed no rain to speak of setting up for a calm harvest through March. The crop was slightly heavier than normal due to January rain although the crunch of natural acidity from a cooler season helped set up good natural fermentation and ultimate wine balance.

Our d’Soumah range of wines are made with fruit sourced from our own and other premium vineyards throughout the Yarra Valley to produce wines of distinct character and finesse that our region has become famous. Pinot Noir is the most famous red from the Yarra Valley and is one of the best regions in Australia for producing new age, linear fresh wines. Our d’Soumah range is built to deliver an exceptional price for value proposition and we believe this wine certainly delivers on that promise.

“Stewed red berries, flashes of spice, a general raspberried brightness and a veneer of creamy oak, the latter more in feel than flavour. It covers all bases both ably and admirably, and feels sound throughout. 90 Points.”
Campbell Mattinson, winefront.com.au, October 2023 [2022 Vintage]
“Soumah – the name means south of the Maroondah Highway – is one of the rising stars of the Yarra Valley with an impressive range of compelling wines at very fair prices. This is a bright, lively young pinot that is extremely food friendly – consider matching it with roast chicken or duck dishes, or a spring picnic. It is a wine with fresh acidity on the palate and some well-integrated oak. I would recommend enjoying this in its youth, and it could even be served lightly chilled.”
Winsor Dobbin, Wine/Food/Travel Writer, August 2023 [2022 Vintage]

“An attractive lighter weighted, entry-level pinot, with dark cherry, spice and s subtle smoky aromas, a suggestion of cola or chinotto. Very soft tannins, succulent and harmonious , well designed for current drinking. 91 Points.”
Huon Hooke, The Real Review, November 2021 [2019 Vintage]

“Medium crystalline ruby-red colour in the glass. Black cherry and sarsaparilla aromas. Light to medium in weight. Some classic cherry and undergrowth pinot characters on the palate. Good length and flow if a little out of focus in the finish. Great value for a proper pinot noir. 90 Points.”
Stuart Knox, The Real Review, March 2021 [2019 Vintage]

“Soumah have a unique ability to pack so much flavour into a wine that is only medium bodied. Bright Pinot garnet in the glass, it shows aromas of stalky strawberry with earth, white mushroom and fine oak. Dense Pinot power is present on the palate with impressive core richness and sinewy tension, and fine powdery tannins in support. A rich dry red style, it has great all-round appeal.”
Stuart Knox, Selector Magazine, Mar/Apr 2021 [2019 Vintage]

“Sweetly fragrant red and dark cherries with some amaro-like herb and spice complexity. The palate has a very fresh, crisply defined feel with intense red-cherry flavors and a crunchy resolve. 92 Points.”
Nick Stock for JamesSuckling.com, October 2020 [2019 Vintage]

“Refreshing, uncomplicated and definitely a focus on drinkability. Soft tannins on a lighter frame with flavours of cherry and pips, savoury accents and a fleck of spice. 90Points.”
Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion, August 2019 [2018 Vintage]

“Ruby red, deep and intense aromas, youthfulness showing in the glass! Ripe fruit abounds, fresh acidity supporting the fruit. Layers of complexity here, take it slow. Strawberries, raspberries, plums and cherries, fruit focussed but throw in some cool mint. Lots of cherries did I say. Good seamless integrated oak, silky fine tannins, smooth long delicious and lineal fruit on the palate, delicious and moreish. Very easy drinking need I say, balanced pure fruit going on and on. Try it with roast pork belly and oven baked vegetables.”
Paul Ippolito, August 2019 [2018 Vintage]

“This has fresh and approachable style with aromas of fresh strawberries and cherries, as well as field flowers and a brambly edge. The palate is fresh and lively and offers a very vibrant and drinkable impression with plenty of strawberry flavor. 92 Points.”
Nick Stock for JamesSuckling.com, June 2019 [2018 Vintage]

“Tight rich cherry aromas – quite complex, a gorgeous mouthful of flavours. Tight and taut with fine grain tannins, superb now but will become STELLAR!”
Dan Traucki/Director at Wine Assist, April 2019 [2018 Vintage]

“A very enjoyable Pinot Noir oozing easy drinking factor. It’s good value for money too. Sour red cherries plus lithe raspberries and strawberries are all the rage. Red apple acidity frames the palate before a soft fine pepper spice wraps around the fruit. The finish is delightful and moreish – a two glass proposition for sure. Drink now to five years. 91/100”
QWine, April 2019 [2018 Vintage]

“Ripe fragrant cherry with notes of oak and stems. The tannins are firm, requiring time to soften, but it has potential.”
2018 Winewise Yarra Valley Pinot Noir Tasting – 4/5 stars [2017 Vintage]

“The entry level Soumah Yarra Pinot is genuinely likeable. It’s a bright and lively Yarra Pinot with a sappy red currant and raspberry nose, then a crunchy palate with a pithy finish. Exuberance is the attraction here, even if it’s a lightish wine. 91 Points.”
Andrew Graham, Oz Wine Review, Oct 2018 [2017 Vintage]

“Stick your nose into a glass of this and inhale deeply – it’s gloriously pure and intense, like cherry and raspberry liqueur. Those aromas spill easily into the mouth as well, rising, fragrant with florals and seasoned by tantalizing spices. Soft in the drinking, juicy with swirling red berry/cherry flavours and the faintest sticky tannin palate coating. Very pretty drinking. Best with Chinese barbecued pork dishes.”
