2023 Barbera Nebbiolo d'Soumah

The classic pairing of two noble north-eastern Italian varieties combine here to create a savoury elegant red wine with soft fruit and charming length. The Nebbiolo brings excellent tannin and finesse with aromas of wild herbs and violets, while the Barbera compliments with ripe red berry fruit and velvet mouthfeel.

Winter was wetter and warmer than the 25-year average, building up the water table, with spring being cooler than normal slowing down the vegetative cycle. These cooler temperatures persisted into summer with some abnormal drenching rains in January adding to the mild temperatures. February witnessed no rain to speak of setting up for a calm harvest. The crop was slightly heavier than average due to the early rain although the structure of natural acidity from a cooler season helped set up good natural fermentation and ultimate wine balance.

Our d’Soumah range of wines are made with fruit sourced from our own and other premium vineyards throughout the Yarra Valley to produce wines of distinct character and finesse that our region has become famous.

“Bright and youthful in the glass. Fragrantly lifted aromas of blueberry, bramble, briar, wet earth, spice and a menthol lick. The palate is textured, layered, savoury and delicious. There’s a core of dark, brooding blackberry fruit, a touch of anise/spice and then these fabulously savoury and shapely tannins kick in and give real purpose and drive. Delicious! 93 Points.”

“…A savoury, loamy, earthen red with cherry-berry flavours doing just enough to keep everything moving. A savoury version of the easy-going red, with a good sense of shape to the palate, too.”
Campbell Mattinson, Halliday Wine Companion, August 2020 [2018 Vintage]

“Feels ‘Mod-Aus’ in the vein of the food movement, pretty and sweet fruited, but an undercurrent of tang and savoury that feels wholly Italian. It’s easy on the palate, soft and juicy, finds some pucker and tartness as it closes. A dry-ish red of lolling, easy feel and general drinkability that sits in second gear and cruises nicely. 91 Points.”
