09 May EVENT SOLD OUT! When in Rhone! Masterclass, 25 & 26 March. Limited Seats!
Rather than focus solely on one grape variety, this Masterclass highlights the prominent red and white varieties from one wine-growing region, the northern Rhône, France. Steeped in history and home to Syrah (Shiraz) and Viognier, here are some interesting facts about these two varieties;
• They are half-sisters having a common parent, Mondeuse Blanche
• The first cultivated vines in the northern Rhone are said to have been planted around 600BC, with more concentrated growing later in the 13th Century and beyond
• Only 5% of wines produced in the Rhône come from the northern region; mostly from Syrah grapes, with a very small percentage being Viognier
Our discussion will compare two cool climates: northern Rhône with harsh winters and warm summers and the other (much younger) cool climate region of south-east Australia, the Yarra Valley. Discover the similarities and contrasts between locations, vineyards and vintages.
Tasting will consist of nine samples of Syrah and Viognier produced from our Hexham vineyard, both current and museum releases, as well as Northern Italian imports exclusively sourced for this Masterclass from Côte Rôtie, where Syrah is the focus, and Condrieu, known for Viognier.
Wine tasting will be accompanied by small bites, specially matched and prepared by Chef Paul.
