Soumah is dedicated to bringing the charm of northern Italy into an Australian glass. From our own Italian wines grown and made by SOUMAH, to a hand-picked selection of import partners, Soumah is one of the few places in Victoria where a regional cellar door, restaurant and wide ranging boutique wine shop come together under one roof.
This collection brings together every angle of our Italian wine story: wine grown on our own Hexham Vineyard and wine imported directly from small producers in Piedmont, Trentino, Veneto, Friuli and Tuscany. It is one of the few places in Australia where a Yarra Valley Nebbiolo and a Nebbiolo from Piedmont can end up on the same tasting bench.
Italian Wines from the Yarra Valley
Our own Italian wines start in the vineyard. Savarro (Traminer), Marzemino, Brachetto, Barbera, Pinot Grigio,Nebbiolo, Pinot Nero, and Nebbiolo Bianco are planted at our Hexham Vineyard and hand-tended for a cool climate expression of grapes that may usually stay in northern Italy.
- Savarro, an ancient white variety from the first millennium has become one of our signature whites, offering fresh citrus and spice in a wine that ages elegantly.
- Marzemino brings soft plum and cherry fruit and a lightness that suits warm afternoons.
- Nebbiolo is the wine our cellar door team gets asked about most. Integrated tannins give the wine great structure and finesse alongside the violets, red fruits and anise on the palate.
- Brachetto is absolutely unique with its Turkish Delight sweetness and slight effervescence.
- Nebbiolo Bianco or Arneis is a soft, floral white wine excellent for the hot afternoon.
Alongside these, we grow French varieties (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz,Viognier and Cabernet) that complement the Italian collection and reflect the Yarra Valley's own personality.

Beyond what we grow, Soumah works directly with growers in northern Italy and are Italian wine merchants in Australia, importing rare and small-production bottles that are difficult to find elsewhere in the country. Our import list includes:

Our short but hot and dry summer, cool nights throughout and even the fog that descends on our hills in late summer are reminiscent of regions in northern Italy. The day degree summation in the growing season is also similar allowing the later picked varieties to ripen slowly in the autumn breeze.
