2022 SV Mezzaluna
Mezzaluna, is our Reserve Nebbiolo. It means half-moon in Italian, representing that it is only made in the best vintages. The wine is made from select clones that produce smaller bunches resulting in superior fruit intensity and a definitive tannin profile. The wine spends over 100 days on skins after ferment then 3 years in seasoned puncheons (500L) and a further 6 months in bottle before its eventually release 4 years after harvest.

"So many scents and flavours to get excited by in Soumah’s inaugural reserve nebbiolo, and the good news is that Mezzaluna remains singularly youthful as a four-year-old. It will enjoy a long life ahead. Strong in heart and fine in delivery of lifted florals, it mixes pressed flowers and rose petal with earthy, ferrous, undergrowth notes and a rich core of deep red fruits, dark cherries and prune. Give it some air, let it breathe, and it just gets better and better in the glass, changing each time you take a sip. Ripe, generous nebbiolo tannins come into play with noteworthy structure – as is the grape’s want – and a freshness of acidity. Dry, astringent Italian-esque finish seals this wine which definitely falls into the riper, richer style but carries it off with real aplomb and class. 95 Points."

"The team at Soumah have noticed that the changing climate has meant that the Yarra Valley is now starting to mirror the climate of northern Italy. If they can replicate the great Barolos from Piedmont, then we are in for some exciting times. They have been offering a single vineyard Nebbiolo from the Hexham Vineyard in the Yarra since 2015. This wine is evidence of the evolution of the style and a large step along the journey. Experience now leads them to leaving the fruit on skins for more than 100 days and for maturation to take place in older 500-litre puncheons. They have been keen to release a Reserve Nebbiolo and 2022 finally provided the conditions to encourage that. This is that wine. When making it, they extended time in the puncheons by an extra twelve months.
The colour is a pale garnet, while the nose weaves through aromas of red fruits, warm earth, charcuterie, raspberries, bay leaves, coffee grinds, aniseed, florals and dried herbs. The wine is focused and has real direction. The level of elegance exhibited here is a little unexpected, but most welcome. A sleek texture leads to fine tannins on an impressively long finish and a line of fine acidity runs the full journey. Enjoy this over the next ten to twelve years. 94 Points."

"Translucent, ruby at the core giving way to garnet at the rim. Oak dominates the initial perfume — clove, old leather — but a swirl opens things up: sautéed mushroom, red liquorice, dried rose, red cherry, fennel and spiced plum. There's levity to the palate, but it's firmly grounded by stacked, chalky tannins — the defining feature of this release. Plum, cherry, blood orange, red liquorice, cinnamon and tar are quickly bound up in that structure, and the finish lingers with persistence. There's genuine complexity here and serious bones, though the sensibility leans brooding and ripe over ethereal, with oak playing a material role. One for the cellar. 93 Points."

2022 VINTAGE
Winter was half a degree warmer than the 25-year average. Although vines were still dormant, bud burst was earlier than average. Spring saw 100mm more rain than normal and unsettled weather around Melbourne Cup saw poor flowering and fruit set. This significantly lowered the crop by reducing bunches and making them smaller. Even though summer was hotter than normal high rainfall in January meant no excessive heat spikes. Overall, a wetter and hotter year, with low yield meant a small but high-quality crop.
