2020 Brachetto Frizzante d'Soumah

Brachetto is a north eastern Italian grape variety that has been a favourite since the time of Romans. Only a few vineyards in Australia grow the variety that is like liquid Turkish delight. The sweet flavour of rose water and strawberries fills your senses yet finishing clean and fresh. Soft bubbles, a light sweetness and lower alcohol make this wine the perfect start or finish to any meal.

    2020 VINTAGE:
The further we got into winter, the colder and wetter it became to the past 25-year average. Spring continued in this vain with temperatures cooler than average, and rainfall higher, with the dam filling naturally in late November. December bucked the trend with abnormally high temperatures, five days above 35°C degrees and three days above 40°C and very low rainfall. This mirrored the rest of the country where the drought and high temperatures prevailed throughout Queensland and New South Wales.

We thought we were staring down a very hot, dry summer to come, however, January and February brought generally cooler weather and significantly higher rainfall than normal (112mm more). Furthermore, the season started to lengthen with picking dates extending out as much as two weeks more than has been the norm recently for some varieties.

Our Brachetto was handpicked in early March and cool tank fermented to retain the fresh fruit flavours. We stopped the fermentation before the wine was completely dry and the natural sugars that remain give this wine its delicate sweetness.

Our d’Soumah range of wines are made with fruit sourced from our own and other premium vineyards throughout Victoria to produce wines of distinct character and finesse. They are built to deliver an exceptional price for value proposition and we believe this wine certainly delivers on that promise.

“Normally these kinds of wines seem an anomaly in wine recommendations but this wine is so well put together, and, guilty as charged, I loved drinking it. So fresh, gently sweet, those pretty and perky little bubbles charging around, and enough crunchy acidity to ensure the wine feels vibrant and so very cleansing. Post meals, this is unreal. A win in the sweet fizzy wine landscape. 92 Points.”
Mike Bennie, WBM, March 2021 [2020 Vintage]

“It’s very pretty in the glass: a youthful, medium to full-pink with a purple tint and a vigorous froth of bubbles. The bouquet is fresh, intense and strongly muscat-scented, while the palate backs up nicely with well-measured sweetness and a lovely grapy fruitiness that lingers well. It’s an exemplar for the style. 90 Points.”
Huon Hooke, The Real Review, March 2021 [2020 Vintage]

“Sweet ripe fruit on the nose. Cherries, strawberries, raspberries you get it. Not overdone though even though I mentioned ripe. The gently sparkling Frizzante nature of the wine coupled with the natural acidity tempers any overt sweetness and imparts a delicacy and finesse to the palate. Note, whilst this is not strictly a dessert wine, more so an aperitif, it went down a treat with homemade trifle. Very nice easy Summer drinking. Cheers to the New Year!”
Paul Ippolito, January 2021 [2020 Vintage]

“Made from the northern Italian variety brachetto, which is rare in Australia, this shows musk and rose water on the nose and lightly sparkling palate with some natural sweetness and a crisp finish. It’s almost like drinking liquid Turkish delight. It’s a great match for fruit pastries or a fresh fruit pavlova. 91 Points.”
Mike Frost, January 2021 [2020 Vintage]

“In the glass this dessert wine is a pinky peach colour with juicy notes of fresh strawberries, pears and citrus on the nose. The palate follows suit in terms of flavours. It’s got fruit sweetness but this is balanced by acidity which makes it very yummy and not sickly sweet as some might worry about being a dessert wine. Very enjoyable!”

“The back label says ‘liquid Turkish delight’ and that just about sums it up. Something a little different to take the sting out of a sweltering day perhaps? Light on the fizz and low on the alcohol too (11%), rose water and ripe strawberries lead the way with fairy floss hot on their tail. Not overly sweet, it is quite a cleansing wine and ideal for a pre-dinner aperitif or match it with some desserts. I had a glass with Thai and it did the job. For maximum effect, partially freeze three-quarters of a bottle, shake it up and you have an instant slushie. Hello pool time! Drink now.”
    QWine, December 2020 [2020 Vintage]

“The combination of obvious sweetness and light, zippy, fresh-faced fruit flavour makes for a pretty winning combination. It has a good feel to it too; mouthfeel. Cherries, strawberries and citrus. It’s light, fragrant, gently sweet and delicious.”
The Winefront, December 2020 [2020 Vintage]

“Gently sparkling and made in a sweet raspberried style though it has enough freshness and zip for it to work (just) as a table wine. There are far worse ways to spend your time.”
Campbell Mattinson, Halliday Wine Companion, August 2020 [2019 Vintage]

“Sweet canned peach nose with richly flavoured palate and balanced sweetness. 3 Stars.”
    Winestate Magazine, Aug/Sept 2020 [2019 Vintage]

“Sweet! Lurid garnet colour. Slippery texture, light bubbles, vivacious and lively style. Clean and fresh in its way. Does the job really well. 90 Points.”
