An ancient green-skinned, tight-bunched variety that was first recorded in the 10th century. Over the millennia it traveled to all corners of Europe and was then extensively used to create many of today’s modern varieties. The cool climate of the Yarra Valley is perfect for the variety, which was gently picked, then cool tank and barrel fermented to retain fresh aromatics and aged on lees for good texture.

“I haven’t seen this Savarro for a couple of years and little has changed – it’s still a delicious and refreshing wine. Nicely done team Soumah.

Some partial barrel fermentation and time on lees has built some textural appeal. A variety of Greek origin, there’s a wonderful feel about this wine. Opening with white flower and lemon juice aromas, a fine minerally drive sits behind the textural presence. Soak up the ocean and sea spray with this in your glass, and a handful of prawns for the win.

Drink to three years. 92 Points.”
QWine, December 2021 [2021 Vintage]

“Light straw-yellow hue. A talcy powder-puff aroma, a trace of floral muskstick aroma and some creamy yeast lees overtones. The palate is likewise talcy, confectionery and perhaps leavened by a faint trace of sweetness. A well-made soft, upfront white with a touch of richness. 90 Points.”
Huon Hooke, The Real Review, December 2021 [2021 Vintage]

“Fresh lemon and apple, as well as a pear and pastry-like edge. A fresh and lithe package. Good phenolic drive and cut. Apple and citrus-fruit flavors. Very crisp and focused. 93 Points.”
Nick Stock, jamessuckling.com, November 2021 [2021 Vintage]

“Wild yeast, lees stirring. Young fresh vibrant aromas of wild flowers and lemon rind. Dynamic, gorgeous flavours of lime and lemon with great depth and fine acidity. SENSATIONAL & SUPERB!!”
Dan Traucki, November 2021 [2021 Vintage]

“Tight and reserved but with good weight to the palate. It feels a bit (in a positive sense) smoky and steely but there’s spicy fruit and just an overall sense of quality. On a good trajectory. 93 Points.”
Campbell Mattinson, The WineFront, November 2021 [2021 Vintage]

“It has shape and texture and feels generally elegant but there’s a good deal of flavour to be enjoyed here. This is a white wine to seek out. It tastes of pear, almond and green pineapple and the finish has a real oomph to it. 94 Points.”
Campbell Mattinson, Halliday Wine Companion, August 2020 [2018 Vintage]

“An interesting wine with pretty musk/spicy/tropical fruit and some residual sweetness. 3 Stars.”
Winestate Magazine, Aug/Sept 2020 [2018 Vintage]

“Savagnin, when treated with thought, is one of the best white varieties out there. It dials in, like here, complexity but vitality, fine detail in sparkly-graphite mineral notes through green melon, green apple characters, and all up a very refreshing, crisp feel. It’s a sophisticated white wine.”
Mike Bennie, Australia’s Wine Business Magazine, Oct 2019 [2018 Vintage]

“A brilliant bright clear straw lemon colour shines from the glass. The purity of the fruit really comes through early on with this excellent white wine. Youthful, fresh and crisp, this is a light to mid bodied white with a medium dryness to it. It is packed full of layers of fruit character, noting citrus dominance of green apples and oranges, tropical fruits, brioche and light mock cream. The palate rewards with apples, lemons, oranges and peaches with a lineal crispness which balances the acidity and fruit flavours beautifully. I kept writing “lovely wine” all over my tasting notes so the drinkability factor is high. Try this with chicken and asparagus risotto.”
Paul Ippolito, Aug 2019 [2018 Vintage]

“Citrus flower, white flowers and limes energise the senses. Partial barrel fermentation and aged on lees, the textural feels from this technique is clear. Old school lemonade leads to a chalky texture and a fine spiced finish which lingers enough to encourage another sip. Seafood and a glass or two of this would make a good afternoon in the sun.”
QWine, July 2019 [2018 Vintage]

“Delicate aromas reminiscent of pea straw with lively melon-like flavours layered with fresh herbal elements.”
2018 WINESTATE Emerging Varietal Awards – 3.5/5 stars [2017 Vintage]

“Savagnin the variety here of course. A lovely freshness on the bouquet with the varietal character well expressed; nashi pear, apple, almond and flinty slate all amongst the array of aromas, less ripe and perhaps more spicy from this vintage. Shows energy through the palate with the flavours mirroring the bouquet and gently persistent acidity providing the framework.”
Halliday Wine Companion 2019 [2017 Vintage]

“The favourite wine of the tasting. Nice bright colour in the glass, lovely toffee and caramel flavours on the nose and soft, glossy, chewy palate, but not too phenolic. The acid is vibrant and natural with toffee characters and a lovely soft texture. Not too right, not too light, just a delicious wine.”
